What Is a Boutique Business? And Why You Should Start One
What’s “boutique” about that business?
A boutique business, to me, is a small, specialised business that offers carefully curated or uniquely designed services or products, with a focus on niche markets and personalised customer service. It’s about the ability to source or create one-of-a-kind offerings.
Many people associate a boutique with fashion and clothing—and while that’s a large part of it—the term boutique simply means a small, fashionable business that sells a particular product or service.
Defining a Small Business
A small business is defined as one with 0–49 employees.
Small businesses in the UK represent 99.3% of the total business population.
Total employment in SMEs was 16.6 million (60% of the total workforce), while turnover was estimated at £2.8 trillion (52%).
Between 2020 and 2021, the largest decrease in the business population occurred a 6.5% drop. I think we can safely assume that a certain virus had something to do with that! (fsb.org.uk).
However, during that period, the shift to virtual workspaces permanently transformed the way we work as a society. It’s now common to work from home, manage your own time, and work virtually—even within the corporate sector. So, why not take that same approach and work for yourself with a boutique business?
